( 1 2389655 SPIRIT LEVEL The present invention relates to a spirit level for checking the attitude of a surface, e.g. to confirm that a surface is horizontal. Spirit levels are used in many applications for checking the attitude of a surface. Examples include checking whether the upper surface of newly laid brickwork is horizontal and/or whether the facing of the brickwork is vertical. A further example that may be mentioned is in the laying of floors to check that the surface being laid is horizontal. In order to obtain an accurate representation of the attitude of a surface it is often necessary that the spirit level be of considerable length. Thus, for example, a spirit level used for checking whether a newly laid floor is horizontal may be some 4fl (120 cm) in length, if not longer, since a shorter length may not give an accurate representation of the attitude of the surface. Spirit levels of similar length may also be used in the building industry for checking the attitude of surfaces of brickwork. The length of spirit levels to provide the required accuracy is also a disadvantage in that the spirit level is cumbersome to carry around. This problem has, of course, long been recognized and one solution is proposed in US-A-4 130 943 which discloses a telescopic sprit level which may be extendable from a length of 2ft (60cm) to 4ft (120 cm) in 6-inch (15cm) increments. However the sprit level illustrated in US-A-4 130 943 is relatively difficult and expensive to construct. It is therefore an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the abovementioned disadvantages. According to the present invention there is provided a spirit level comprising an elongate main body portion with a flat sole and having at least one attitude indicator for checking the attitude of a surface, said body portion having at least one primary extension aria also having a flat sole and being pivotally mounted at one of ( 2 the main body portion so as to be movable between a first position in which the primary extension arm lies against the main body portion and a second position in which the primary extension aim and the main body portion are co-linear with each other with their soles being flush. Thus the spirit level in accordance with the invention has at least one extension arm which may be moved. Spirit levels are used for checking and leveling the surfaces during installation and checking.Figure 1: Spirit Level.A spirit level is a tool used to measure and verify the alignment of a surface, ensuring it is either perfectly horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb). It works on the principle of gravity and uses a sealed vial filled with liquid and an air bubble. The bubble moves within the vial and aligns with the center markings when the surface is correctly positioned.Construction of Spirit LevelA glass tube, whose surfaces are grounded, is fixed in a frame as shown in Fig. 1. A glass tube has got radius ‘R’ which is very large and filled with ether liquid, as well as ether bubble (vapor). Its construction includes:Body: Typically made of wood, metal, or plastic, providing durability and a straight edge.Glass Tube (Vial): A sealed, curved, and transparent tube filled with liquid (alcohol or oil) and a bubble of air.Ether Vapor Bubble: The bubble in the vial indicates the level when it is centered between the marked lines.Cross Spirit Level (90°): A secondary vial positioned at 90° to check for vertical alignment.Markings: Lines on the vial help determine precise leveling.Working Principle of Spirit LevelThe spirit level operates based on gravity:The glass vial is slightly curved, and the bubble naturally moves to the highest point.When the surface is level or plumb, the bubble aligns perfectly between the marked lines on the vial.Working of Spirit LevelFigure 2: Spirit Level.The position of the bubble in the tube will be always at the topmost level which is the principle of working of the spirit level. Spirit levels are used for checking and leveling the surfaces during installation and checking.Figure 1: Spirit Level.A spirit level is a tool used to measure and verify the alignment of a surface, ensuring it is either perfectly horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb). It works on the principle of gravity and uses a sealed vial filled with liquid and an air bubble. The bubble moves within the vial and aligns with the center markings when the surface is correctly positioned.Construction of Spirit LevelA glass tube, whose surfaces are grounded, is fixed in a frame as shown in Fig. 1. A glass tube has got radius ‘R’ which is very large and filled with ether liquid, as well as ether bubble (vapor). Its construction includes:Body: Typically made of wood, metal, or plastic, providing durability and a straight edge.Glass Tube (Vial): A sealed, curved, and transparent tube filled with liquid (alcohol or oil) and a bubble of air.Ether Vapor Bubble: The bubble in the vial indicates the level when it is centered between the marked lines.Cross Spirit Level (90°): A secondary vial positioned at 90° to check for vertical alignment.Markings: Lines on the vial help determine precise leveling.Working Principle of Spirit LevelThe spirit level operates based on gravity:The glass vial is slightly curved, and the bubble naturally moves to the highest point.When the surface is level or plumb, the bubble aligns perfectly between the marked lines on the vial.Working of Spirit LevelFigure 2: Spirit Level.The position of the bubble in the tube will be always at the topmost level which is the principle of working of the spirit level. Fig. 2 shows the principle sketch of spirit level. In this, R-radius of curved glass tube A – is the topmost position of the bubble at horizontal position of spirit level. If bubble moves one division, i.e. from B to B’, the angle of tilt is θ. The level sensitivity per division i.e. the tilt causing the displacement of bubble by one division of the scale is expressed in mm per meter, e.g. 0.02 mm/meter.For measuring very small angle in terms of seconds, the movement of bubble in terms of divisions is measured and multiplied by least count/level sensitivity. We scraped data for all listed flights on the 10 busiest U.S. domestic flight routes, according to the OAG in November of 2023. We recorded the seat pitch in inches and took the average of all listed flights for each airline and aircraft. We cross-checked our data with information on each individual airline’s website to confirm accuracy.
